2008 Pack 236 Blue and Gold
Friday, February 1
6:30 pm
South Lyon East High School

Theme: Chinese New Year

The Blue and Gold Banquet is a birthday party for Cub Scouting and usually celebrated by packs in
February, the anniversary month of the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts of America began in
1910 and Cub Scouting began 20 years later.

For Pack 236, we hold a celebration where scouts, parents and extended family are invited along
with community guests and special friends of our Pack.  The organization of this event is by the 4th
grade Webelos.  This celebration will take place at South Lyon East High School where dinner will
be served.  It is a time when scouts are honored as they advance and earn their rank badges.
Usually a short ceremony is held to acknowledge the advancement of every scout.

Here are the details on this year's Blue Gold Banquet:

History of the Blue Gold Banquet
In 1933 "Cub Leaders' Round Table" suggested Parent / Cub dinners. Soon thereafter, Pack 1 of
Michigan City, Indiana started a tradition of pot-lucks where the dads were to bring utensils made of
wood; whittled by the Cub with his dad. In the 1930s father / son 'bean dinners' and 'Cub family
dinners' began to become commonplace. Finally, in 1943 the name "Blue and Gold Banquet" first
appeared in BSA literature, and became synonymous with "celebrating the birthday of Scouting."

Today, the Blue and Gold banquet is one of the highlights of the program year. It brings together
your Pack's families for a dinner and an evening of fun. The meal is important, but even more
important is the warm, congenial atmosphere created as families enjoy each other's company.

The purpose of the blue and gold banquet is to celebrate the pack's anniversary, recognize pack
leaders and other adults who have been instrumental in the pack's success, and inspire the
leaders, Scouts, and parents. Packs often like to invite former members and other Scouting or
community leaders to take part in the annual blue and gold banquet.

Chinese New Year Information
The Lunar New Year dates from 2600 BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of
the Chinese zodiac.

Because of cyclical lunar dating, the first day of the year can fall anywhere between late January and
the middle of February. On the Chinese calendar, 2008 is Lunar Year 4705-4706.

On the Western calendar, the start of the New Year falls on February 7, 2008 — The Year of the Rat.
If you were born in 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 - you were born under the sign
of the rat.

Like the rat, you are always busily pursuing a personal goal or ambition, and are thus known as one
of the hardest-working signs in the Chinese zodiac.
